President Museveni’s brother, Godfrey Aine Kaguta also known as Sodo has revealed that the president personally asked Shartis Kutesa Musherure to withdraw from the Mawogola North parliamentary race during a meeting at State House.
Sodo disclosed that the president summoned both him and Musherure and cautioned them against any political unrest in Mawogola, referencing the chaos that marred the last NRM primaries.
“President Museveni met us at State House and warned us that he never wants to see any more chaos in Mawogola. He asked Musherure to step down and give me a chance because I also did the same in the last elections,” he said.
Musherure, who is the current Member of Parliament for Mawogola North, released a public statement on Sunday confirming her withdrawal. She cited the President’s intervention and discussions with her family as reasons for stepping aside.
“I regret to inform you that I have withdrawn my candidature for the position of the NRM flag bearer Mawogola North for the period of 2026–2031,” she wrote.
Sodo had previously expressed frustration over Musherure’s hesitation to exit the race, reminding the public that he had stepped aside in 2020 to avoid political instability in the constituency.
