The Shincheonji Church of Jesus has commended journalists for their dedication and resilience, despite operating in challenging environments.
The recognition came as journalists marked World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on May 3rd.
At an event held at the church’s premises in Makerere Kikoni, under the theme “Celebrating Truth: The Power of Media,” church leaders applauded journalists for their role in informing the public, exposing wrongdoing, and shaping society through impactful reporting.
Delivering his message, Daniel Woory Lim, Head Instructor of the church in Uganda, praised journalists for their commitment to truth and service to society.
“We deeply appreciate the partnership and cooperation you have shown in working with us. Through your efforts, many people have been able to receive accurate information and understand our activities,” he said.
“Journalism takes courage, sacrifice, integrity, and persistence. Many times, you work under pressure with tight deadlines and great responsibility, yet you continue to serve society with dedication. For this, we commend and honor you.”
He encouraged journalists to remain steadfast in their professional values.
“We urge you to continue upholding truth, objectivity, and excellence. Your voices and stories have the power to inspire change, build unity, and strengthen communities. Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed—we stand with you and respect the important work you do every day,” Lim added.
Speaking on behalf of journalists, Ronald Kabuye, the Public Relations Officer of the Uganda Journalists Association, welcomed the gesture, noting that it reflects growing recognition of the media’s role in society.
“We are pleased with the gesture by this church to celebrate us. Our profession comes with many challenges—we work in a complex environment. But when an institution like this steps forward to appreciate our work, it is quite impressive and gives us motivation to continue,” he said.
The event featured performances by church children, including plays that depicted the daily realities of journalism.
One of the highlights was a dramatization addressing violence and the media’s role in reporting it—an act that resonated strongly with attendees.
Beyond entertainment, journalists were also engaged in discussions about faith and the church’s mission, including efforts to simplify and promote understanding of biblical teachings.
Uganda joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day with renewed calls for the protection of free speech and the safety of journalists globally.
