More than 200 Spiro electric motorcycle riders took to the streets of Kampala on Friday as the company officially launched its partnership with the Tusker Lite Mount Rwenzori Marathon as the event’s Green Mobility Partner for 2026.
The partnership will see Spiro deploy electric motorcycles during the marathon in Kasese District to transport and support key officials, including journalists and members of the medical team.
The initiative is aimed at promoting clean and sustainable transport while highlighting the connection between environmental health and personal wellbeing.
Amos Wekesa, Co-Founder of the Rwenzori Marathon, said the partnership would add an environmental dimension to an event already known for promoting health and tourism.
“The Rwenzori Marathon is one of the world’s unique sports events, where people run across the Equator. This partnership with Spiro is more than running; it is about connecting personal health with environmental health. We are proud to have Spiro on board as our Green Mobility Partner, promoting green and clean transport at the marathon,” Wekesa said.
Bruce Mucunguzi, Deputy Country Head of Spiro Uganda, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to promoting cleaner transport solutions.
“As an electric mobility solutions provider, we believe that a healthy population starts with a healthy environment. There is an urgent need to embrace clean transport, and Spiro is taking the message of clean mobility to the heart of Kasese, leading the green race and demonstrating the need to protect the region’s natural beauty from carbon emissions,” Mucunguzi said.
He said an active lifestyle should be complemented by a clean and healthy environment characterised by clean air, safe spaces and communities with reduced pollution.
Spiro operates across Africa, providing electric mobility solutions aimed at expanding access to cleaner transport while creating economic opportunities for communities.
The company says it has deployed more than 30,000 electric motorcycles on Ugandan roads and is working to replace fossil-fuel-powered motorcycles with electric alternatives supported by its battery-swapping infrastructure.
The partnership comes as Kampala and other urban centres face growing pressure from increased traffic and vehicle emissions, strengthening calls for cleaner and more sustainable transport options.
Electric motorcycles are increasingly being promoted as one way of reducing transport-related emissions and improving urban air quality.
The Tusker Lite Mount Rwenzori Marathon is scheduled for August 22, 2026, in Kasese District and will feature 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km race categories.
The event, which attracts runners from Uganda and beyond, is also positioning itself as a platform for promoting sports tourism and showcasing the natural beauty of the Rwenzori region.
