A teacher at Mwebaze High School, Kakiri, was killed on the spot while several students sustained injuries after a train collided with the school bus in Mukono District on Friday morning.

The accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. at Namumira–Bukasa Village, Kyetume Parish, Nakisunga Sub-county, along the Katosi Road.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the collision involved a train and a bus carrying students from Mwebaze High School, Kakiri, who were travelling to Jinja District for an educational trip.

“Police in Mukono are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at Namumira–Bukasa Village, Kyetume Parish, Nakisunga Sub-county, along the Katosi Road in Mukono District. The accident involved a train and a bus transporting students of Mwebaze High School, Kakiri, who were travelling to Jinja District for an educational trip,” SP Kawala said.

She confirmed that one female passenger died at the scene, while several students sustained injuries and were rushed for medical attention.

“Police officers, working alongside other emergency responders, are evacuating the injured to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for medical treatment,” she added.

The scene has since been secured as police begin investigations to establish the exact cause and circumstances that led to the collision.

SP Kawala said further verified information would be released as investigations continue.
