Jinja Police have arrested three men accused of impersonating the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, on social media in a scheme to extort money from both police officers and members of the public.
The suspects identified as Abubakar Uthmaan Ariho, Fayim Bukenya, and Dalton Kaweesi were apprehended on 24th March 2026, according to the Uganda Police.
Speaking on the arrest, SP Rachael Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said the three have allegedly been using various social media platforms with the intent to extort money from police officers and the public.
“A case of personation has since been registered. A search conducted at the suspects’ premises led to the recovery of electronic devices and documents believed to have been used in the commission of the crime..”
Kawala added that the case is still under investigation.
