Police is holding a TikTok content creator, Nassif Jingo, over allegations of spreading false information about the death of Yusuf Nsibambi, the Member of Parliament for Mawokota South.
According to police, Nassif was allegedly paid Shs 100,000 by Nsibambi’s political opponents to publish the fake news on his social media account in a bid to tarnish the legislator’s reputation.
The legislator immediately reported the matter to police, prompting Nassif’s arrest. He is currently being detained at CPS Kampala.
“Nassif confessed to the crime and revealed that he was paid by Nsibambi’s political opponents in the country to damage his image,” said SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
Onyango further cautioned the public against abusing social media platforms, particularly during this sensitive political period.
“We urge the public to use social media responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation, especially during this political period where such tactics can be used to discredit opponents. We also warn against accepting payments to damage someone’s reputation online,” SSP Onyango added.
Jingo is expected to be charged under the Computer Misuse Act.
