The High Court in Kampala has sentenced two men to 80 years after being convicted of murder and robbery of boda boda riders.
Aloysius Tamale alias Young Mulo and his co-accused John Bosco Mugisha alias Mukiga went viral in 2019 after being captured on CCTV camera murdering Derrick Muwonge a boda boda rider.
In the video which went viral, the two were seen choking Muwonge while hitting him with a hammer on the head before killing him and robbing his motorcycle in Kakeeka Mengo.
On Monday, Judge Alex Ajiji sentenced each of the two convicts to 40 years imprisonment for the murder of the boda boda rider.
While the prosecution had requested for a death sentence for each of the convicts, the judge said since they already have been sentenced for similar offences, the 40 years is enough.
“This court has a duty to sentence the accused persons to a harsh sentence but considering that each of them already has 70 years in prison over two previous convictions on similar offences, it would not be useful to mete out a death sentence but rather another longer period on remand, so as to ensure that they do not return to the public to continue disturbing other people.Another sentence of 40 years imprisonment would find them spending more than 100 years in prison,” the judge said.
Consequently, he sentenced each to 40 years imprisonment and after deducting the time spent on remand, they are to serve 33 years and two days each.
They two will now each serve 110 years in prison.
