The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) is seeking recovery of more than Shs233 billion owed by the government and Uganda Airlines for various services provided at Entebbe International Airport.
Hassan Musinguzi, the Director of Finance at UCAA, told the Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure chaired by Mwine Mpaka that the government alone accounts for Shs91.6 billion of the outstanding debt.
Musinguzi said the authority will continue engaging the government through the Ministry of Works and Transport to ensure the funds are paid.
“We shall continue lobbying government through the Ministry of Works and Transport to have this debt cleared,” Musinguzi told the committee.
The accumulated arrears arise from several services offered at the airport, including rental space occupied by United Nations agencies, parking fees for Uganda Airlines, and airport passenger service charges, among others.
The revelation came as UCAA officials appeared before the committee to discuss issues affecting the aviation sector and the authority’s financial performance.
The authority has previously raised concerns over unpaid bills, saying delayed payments affect its ability to maintain and improve airport infrastructure and deliver efficient aviation services.
Uganda’s aviation sector has in recent years seen increased activity, with Entebbe International Airport undergoing expansion and modernisation works aimed at improving passenger handling capacity and service delivery.
