The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has commissioned two electricity infrastructure projects worth more than Shs240 million in Butebo District, aimed at improving power reliability and supporting economic activity in the area.
The projects, commissioned over the weekend, include the extension of the electricity distribution network to Petete and the installation of a new 100kVA transformer to support a developing mini-industrial park in Kabarekere Village.
At Petete Primary School, UEDCL extended the distribution network to connect the school to the national grid after it had been fully wired but remained without an electricity connection. The extension also serves Petete Church, nearby households and the Petete Town Council offices.
UEDCL said the intervention is expected to improve access to reliable electricity for residents and institutions in the area while supporting local services and economic activity.
In Kabarekere Village, near St. Paul High School, the utility installed a 100kVA transformer to provide electricity to a mini-industrial park under construction.
Before the intervention, the site depended on a 25kVA single-phase transformer located about 600 metres away. UEDCL said the existing infrastructure was insufficient to meet the park’s projected electricity demand of about 48kW.
“With growing commercial activity and agro-processing in the area, we anticipate increased electricity demand. We have therefore installed a new 100kVA transformer to provide the capacity needed to support industrial and agro-processing activities,” UEDCL Managing Director Eng. Joselynne Rwabwogo said.
The commissioning ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during a thanksgiving ceremony held in Petete in honour of Energy Minister Dr. Monica Musenero.

Rwabwogo said the projects form part of UEDCL’s broader efforts to address electricity reliability challenges and improve service delivery across the country.
The utility has also embarked on a nationwide stakeholder engagement programme intended to strengthen cooperation with local leaders, address customer concerns and gather feedback on electricity distribution services.
Acknowledging concerns over power outages, Rwabwogo said UEDCL was implementing both immediate and long-term infrastructure interventions to address network constraints and respond to rising electricity demand.
“These interventions reaffirm our commitment to strengthening the electricity distribution network, improving reliability and delivering better quality power to customers across the country,” she said.
The new infrastructure is expected to improve electricity access in Butebo while providing additional capacity for businesses, agro-processing activities, public institutions and households as the district’s economy continues to expand.
