Watoto Church has launched the 2025 edition of its iconic Christmas Cantata, announcing major upgrades to what has long been one of Uganda’s largest and most anticipated holiday productions.
This year’s event will run from 19th to 22nd December 2025, beginning at 8:00 pm each night, and is expected to draw more than 50,000 people.
The Cantata—now a hallmark of Kampala’s festive season—combines music, drama, dance, audio-visual artistry and Christmas classics to retell the story of Jesus Christ. Over 1,000 performers and crew members are set to participate in this year’s production.
Speaking at the launch at Watoto Downtown, Pastoral Team Leader Pastor Edward Mwesigye highlighted the significance of the annual event, noting that Watoto has staged the Cantata in Kampala for more than 40 years. He added that the production has transformed countless lives, with thousands committing to Christ through its message.
Due to steadily rising attendance, Watoto Church has relocated the Cantata from its Downtown sanctuary, which seats 1,200, to the much larger Old Kampala Senior Secondary School playground.
The new venue is expected to accommodate at least 10,000 guests per night across the five-day showcase.
Pastor Graham Tugume, who leads Worship and Arts, described this year’s edition as the most ambitious yet, featuring expanded sets, advanced sound, and the unveiling of what is projected to be Africa’s tallest Christmas tree.
Media partners—including Next Media and Vision Group—confirmed their continued support to widen the production’s reach. Next Media’s Ben Mwine lauded the collaboration, saying it ensures that audiences can experience the Cantata physically or via digital platforms such as Afro Mobile.
Vision Group’s Phiona Tamale commended the consistency and excellence of the annual production.
SafeBoda, the official transport partner, also pledged subsidized fares to facilitate movement to and from the Old Kampala grounds throughout the event period.
In addition to the Cantata, Watoto Church will host Christmas Carols at the same venue on December,17 2025.
With a presence spanning 18 campuses in Uganda and South Sudan, and more than 35,000 congregants, Watoto Church continues its mission of providing spiritual renewal and practical community support as it marks 41 years of ministry.
