At least 28 prisoners and one staff member from Uganda Government Prison in Nwoya were involved in a non-fatal accident on Tuesday.
According to the Uganda Prisons Services, the incident occurred at Paranga in Nwoya District at around 4:00 PM when the prison vehicle reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a boda boda rider, leading to the accident.
“All the injured were rushed to Anaka Hospital for medical attention,” said Frank Baine ,the Prisons spokesperson.
“Two of the prisoners were later referred to Gulu Hospital for further management.”
He confirmed that all the injured prisoners and the staff member are currently in stable condition.
“Preliminary information indicates that the driver lost control as he tried to avoid knocking a bodaboda rider. An inspection team has been dispatched to investigate the incident,” Baine said.
Authorities have pledged to keep the public and relatives of the prisoners informed as investigations continue.
