Four people have died and 13 others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash that occurred early Tuesday morning at around 6:40AM at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo highway.
The accident involved a speeding taxi , registration number UA 889AM and a pedestrian.
According to preliminary findings, the taxi was moving at high speed when it knocked down a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road.
The impact caused the driver to lose control, veer off the road, crash into the bridge, and plunge into River Malaba.
Three passengers aboard the vehicle died on the spot, while thirteen others, including the driver, were rushed to Tororo Hospital with varying degrees of injury.
The body of the pedestrian who was hit also lies at the same hospital’s mortuary, alongside the other deceased, pending postmortem examinations.
The mangled wreckage of the vehicle has since been towed to Busia Police Station as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
SP Michael Kananura, the public relations officer Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety confirmed the incident, emphasizing the need for road users to be more vigilant and responsible.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and yield to pedestrians, particularly in busy areas, to prevent such tragic incidents,” said SP Kananura.
