Police have dismissed allegations circulating on social media that officers at Kajjansi Police Station unlawfully seized property and bypassed due process while handling a rape case reported last week.

Journalist Andrew Kyamagero is a post on X on Sunday raised alarm over what he termed as extortion by police officers attached to Kajjansi police station whom he said had confiscated phones and other property while investigating a rape case.

In a statement issued Monday, police clarified that the actions taken were part of an active investigation into a case reported on 23 August 2025 by a 22-year-old hairdresser and resident of Zana, Makindye Municipality, Wakiso District.

According to police, the victim alleged that she had met one of the suspects, Ngobi Simon, in July at Karting, Lubowa, and kept in contact. On the evening of the 23rd, after meeting him again, she was allegedly given an alcoholic drink and later driven to Canaan Estate, Akright, Kajjansi, where she was raped by Ngobi and another man known only as “Chairman.”

ASP Luke Oweyesigyire, the KMP Deputy Police Spokesperson explained that a team of detectives, scene of crime officers, and uniformed personnel immediately swung into action after the case was reported.

“Beddings and other relevant exhibits were recovered, including HIV testing kits. The victim was medically examined and enrolled for specialized care as a rape victim,” Luke Owoyesigyire said.

The vehicle allegedly used to transport the victim, a Subaru UBP 276F Silver Grey, was also recovered and parked at Kajjansi Police Station for examination. Investigators further recorded statements from witnesses, including private security guards at the estate.

Police added that preliminary findings revealed the victim managed to lock herself in a room after the assault, forcing the suspects to flee.

Responding to widespread claims that officers had illegally raided the suspect’s residence and extorted property, the police dismissed the accusations.

“We take note of the concerns raised on social media and elsewhere. However, we wish to clarify that the recovery of property was carried out as part of the investigative process, in line with established procedure to preserve exhibits in sexual offense cases. The suspects were not at the premises at the time, and no unlawful raid or extortion was conducted,” Owoyesigyire clarified.

At the same time, police leadership pledged to hold officers accountable if any misconduct is proven.

“That said, the Police leadership reaffirms that any officer found to have engaged in extortion or abuse of authority will be subjected to investigation and disciplinary action. We remain committed to accountability and transparency,” the statement continued.

Police confirmed that the two prime suspects, Ngobi Simon and “Chairman,” are still at large.

“We strongly urge them to come forward and record their own statements with Police to ensure their side of the story is heard and due process is followed,” the statement urged.

The force condemned the crime and assured the public of continued professionalism in handling the case.

“We condemn all acts of sexual violence in the strongest terms. At the same time, we reiterate our commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights of all parties. Investigations are ongoing, and the public will be updated in due course. We appeal for calm, patience, and responsible communication as the truth is established through lawful procedures,” police concluded.
