The British High Commission in Kampala has hosted a high-profile reception marking the 77th birthday of King Charles III, celebrating his lifelong dedication to public service, environmental conservation and commitment to the Commonwealth.

The reception, held at the residence of British High Commissioner Lisa Chesney MBE, drew senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, civil society actors and partners of the United Kingdom. The gathering underscored not only the King’s birthday but also the strengthening bilateral relationship between the UK and Uganda.

In her remarks, High Commissioner Chesney commended King Charles III for his decades-long global advocacy for environmental protection and climate action.

“His Majesty King Charles III has long championed the protection of our planet, earning recognition for his unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, biodiversity and climate action. As we celebrate his 77th birthday, we also celebrate a shared vision with Uganda—of a greener, more sustainable future for all,” she said.

This year’s celebration centred around a theme of wildlife and nature, reflecting the UK’s partnership with Uganda in climate action, conservation and green growth. Guests viewed award-winning images from the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, alongside photographs showcasing Uganda’s diverse ecosystems. The showcase aimed to highlight the importance of protecting natural heritage for future generations.

Coinciding with the ongoing Climate COP, the event offered a moment to reflect on joint efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable development.

The UK reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the climate crisis through its legally binding Net Zero strategy, targeting carbon neutrality by 2050. The transition is also seen as an economic opportunity, with projections indicating that UK businesses delivering net-zero solutions could achieve export values reaching £1 trillion by 2030.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s COP30 message was echoed during the event:
“You don’t protect jobs and communities by sticking with the status quo. You don’t meet a challenge like climate change by standing still—you do it by embracing change, embracing the opportunities, and doing it together.”

The evening also highlighted key milestones in the UK–Uganda partnership. More than 1,300 Ugandan health workers have benefited from UK-supported training programmes. Clean cooking initiatives implemented in collaboration with government and private sector partners have reached over 20 million people. Over 50 British Chamber of Commerce member companies are actively operating in Uganda, employing more than 20,000 people.

The UK has further mobilised over US$22 million in private capital to support Uganda’s agro-industrialisation efforts and strengthen climate resilience for more than 170,000 individuals in Northern Uganda. Additionally, the UK Export Finance portfolio supporting major Ugandan infrastructure stands at nearly £800 million.

The reception blended British and Ugandan cultural elements, including wildlife-themed displays, culinary offerings and musical performances that celebrated the long-standing friendship between the two countries.

The High Commission also recognised the contributions of the Ugandan–British community and the Ugandan diaspora in the UK, noting their role in bridging cultures, driving innovation and strengthening bilateral ties.

As COP30 continues, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising climate finance for Uganda. The celebration served as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.
