The Electoral Commission (EC) has condemned the escalating incidents of violence during ongoing election campaigns, including the deadly clash that claimed the life of a National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter on Friday, 28th November 2025.
EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama described the violent confrontations involving candidates, their agents, supporters, and law enforcement officers as unfortunate and regrettable.
“The Commission condemns the violent episodes on Friday, 28th November, 2025, that resulted in the loss of one person and injuries to others. Such incidents clearly do not add value to our democratic dispensation,” Byabakama said.
He noted that the campaign period has largely been peaceful across the country, with over 83,000 candidates contesting 45,000 elective positions, ranging from subcounty councillors to the presidency.
Byabakama called for a thorough investigation into the clashes to determine the root causes and ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable under the law.
“These incidents should be investigated to establish the root causes, and culprits should be held accountable in accordance with relevant laws,” he said.
The EC also reminded all political actors to maintain peace and adhere to electoral laws throughout the remaining campaign period.
“The Commission reiterates its call on all stakeholders, including candidates, their agents, and supporters, to conduct themselves peacefully and within the law during this campaign period and beyond,” he added.
Byabakama further warned against the use of sectarian language, which fuels hatred, incites violence, and undermines the integrity of the electoral process. He urged law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with electoral guidelines while applying only proportionate measures.
The statement comes amid rising political tensions in several parts of the country, with police and political actors trading accusations over responsibility for the escalating violence.
