Hoima City Stadium has become one of Uganda’s most ambitious and transformative sports infrastructure projects, underscoring the country’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
Built by Turkish construction firm M/S SUMMA under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract, the project is being supervised by the Ministry of Works and Transport. The EPC model covers design, construction and turnkey delivery, placing full responsibility for completion and performance on the contractor.
The stadium complex sits on a 16.8-hectare (168,000 square metres) site in Hoima City and features a 20,000-seater main stadium, complemented by a 2,000-seater indoor mini arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool (25m x 12.5m), and extensive outdoor sports facilities.
World- class multi-sport facility
Beyond the main football arena, the Hoima City Stadium project includes:
A standard football pitch (68m x 106m)
An outdoor running track
Two basketball courts and two volleyball courts
A modern training pitch
Four fully equipped dressing rooms
A 50-seater press conference room
The stadium has been designed with inclusivity and comfort in mind, featuring:
839 parking spaces (720 open, 119 closed)
Eight elevators (2 VVIP, 2 VIP, 3 for persons with disabilities, and one service elevator)
59 standard sanitary units and 13 accessible units
10 concession units covering 710 square metres
Five retail units
VIP facilities include one Presidential Suite, 12 sky boxes, and multiple VIP lounges, aligning the stadium with international hosting standards.
Construction timeline and workforce
Construction officially commenced on September 1, 2024, with an expected project duration of 18 months and a 12-month defects liability period. The official completion date is set for February 28, 2028.
At the peak of construction, the project employed 1,067 workers, reflecting significant local participation:
732 Ugandans (69%)
266 Turkish nationals (25%)
69 personnel (6%) from other countries
The stadium’s total cost stands at approximately USD 129 million (about Shs500 billion).
A Legacy rooted in history
The Hoima City Stadium traces its origins to a landmark act of philanthropy. In April 2019, the family of the late Dr. James Rujumba—East Africa’s first veterinary doctor—donated 10 acres of land to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to support the construction of a legacy sports facility.
This commitment was formalised in October 2020, when FUFA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rujumba family, paving the way for the stadium’s development.
Beyond football
While the stadium is expected to host football, rugby and athletics, its scope goes beyond elite sport. Officials say the facility will serve as a multi-purpose hub for community engagement, youth development and regional economic growth, particularly within the Bunyoro sub-region.
Once completed, Hoima City Stadium will rank among Uganda’s most advanced sports facilities and is expected to play a central role in AFCON 2027 preparations.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to commission the stadium later today, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s sports and infrastructure development journey.
