Police have arrested Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG).
According to police, Bireete is currently being held in custody as investigations continue and is expected to be arraigned before court in due course.
Confirming the development, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Rachael Kawala said police had taken Bireete into custody and assured the public that due process would be followed.
“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of Sarah Bireete, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance. She is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course,” Kawala said.
Kawala made the confirmation in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), noting that further details would be communicated at an appropriate time.
Police have not yet disclosed the specific charges against Bireete, stating only that investigations are ongoing.
