President Museveni has hosted Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at State House, Entebbe, for high-level discussions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Sudan and promoting regional stability.
The meeting comes as Sudan continues to grapple with a war that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF. Fighting that began in Khartoum has since spread to other parts of the country, displacing millions, disrupting essential services and deepening what has been described as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
During the talks, President Museveni reiterated his long-held position that sustainable peace in Sudan can only be achieved through dialogue and inclusive political engagement.
He cautioned against identity-based politics, arguing that it entrenches divisions and weakens national cohesion.
“When I last visited Sudan, I met President Bashir and advised against the politics of identity instead of the politics of interest,” Museveni said. “Identity politics is poisonous. It does not yield good results. What matters are shared interests that unite people.”
The President emphasised the importance of negotiations and called for African-led solutions to address African challenges, urging the warring parties to prioritise dialogue over continued military confrontation.
Gen. Dagalo thanked President Museveni for hosting him and commended his leadership, describing him as a respected statesman on the continent.
“Your victory is not only a gain for Ugandans but for the whole continent. We look at you as a wise man of Africa. We truly believe in your principles and your commitment to peace,” Dagalo said.
He acknowledged the significant humanitarian and institutional strain Sudan continues to face as a result of the conflict and underscored the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution.
Dagalo also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Uganda and the broader region, particularly in trade, education and regional integration, as part of efforts to support long-term stability and development.
