Six people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning along the Kiboga–Hoima highway in Kyankwanzi District.
The accident happened at around 4:00am at Kyakabuga village when a bus, registration number UBQ 595G, traveling from Kampala to Hoima, collided head-on with a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBF 541C, which was coming from Hoima carrying charcoal.
According to Uganda Police Force spokesperson for Wamala Region, SSP Lamek Kigozi, the impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles, burning them extensively.
Six people died on the spot. Two of the deceased were occupants of the bus, including the driver, Muhumuza Gerald, 40, a resident of Hoima West Division.
The other identified victim is Linongola Matsukizo, 47, a Congolese national and businesswoman. The four other victims, who were traveling in the Fuso truck, had not yet been identified by press time.
Seven other people sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Kikonda Health Centre III for medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Rescue teams from Kyankwanzi and Hoima districts responded to the scene, with a fire brigade unit from Hoima helping to contain the blaze.
By press time, the wreckage of both vehicles remained at the scene as arrangements were underway to tow them away.
Motorists using the Kiboga–Hoima road have been advised to exercise caution when approaching Kyakabuga, as the road remains partially closed.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash.
“Our hearts are with the bereaved families and those injured in this tragic accident,” SSP Kigozi said.
