Democratic Party (DP) president and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has confirmed he will attend the National Resistance Movement (NRM) retreat for newly elected Members of Parliament at Kyankwanzi.
The retreat, which begins Tuesday, April 7, will run for about two weeks at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi District.
It is aimed at orienting legislators on the NRM’s legislative agenda, governance priorities and ideological direction, as well as guiding discussions on key positions such as the Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Mao announced his participation through his X account, where he welcomed the invitation from the ruling party.
“I confirm that I’ll be participating in the Leaders’ Retreat for the NRM Parliamentary Caucuses from 7th–15th April, 2026 at the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi District. I thank our sister party NRM for the kind invitation,” he posted.
His decision is likely to stir fresh debate, given his 2022 cooperation agreement with the NRM, which caused divisions within the DP and led to the exit of some members to other opposition parties.
Meanwhile, newly elected NRM MPs, along with independent legislators aligned to the party, members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), and senior party officials, set off for Kyankwanzi from Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The retreat, expected to host more than 350 legislators, will focus on strengthening party cohesion and discipline as MPs begin a new parliamentary term, while aligning their roles with the party’s broader national agenda.
