Uganda’s renowned saxophonist Isaiah Katumwa has reached a major international milestone after his new single “New Days” entered the Billboard Smooth Jazz Airplay Chart in the United States.
The chart tracks how frequently jazz songs are played on major U.S. radio stations and is considered one of the most competitive platforms for smooth jazz musicians worldwide.
Katumwa’s entry marks a significant achievement for Ugandan and African jazz, particularly in the smooth jazz category, which has traditionally been dominated by American and European artists. His single “New Days” features a soft, reflective sound infused with African jazz elements, continuing his signature style of blending local rhythms with global appeal.
His success follows in the footsteps of African jazz trailblazers such as Hugh Masekela, Jonathan Butler, Manu Dibango, Richard Bona, and Angelique Kidjo, who helped pave the way for African artists on international stages.
What sets Katumwa’s milestone apart is his breakthrough into the highly specialized smooth jazz radio format, a niche space that is often difficult for non-Western instrumentalists to penetrate.
The performance of “New Days” in the coming weeks will determine how far it climbs on the chart. Continued airplay could further cement Katumwa’s position as one of Africa’s leading jazz voices and create greater opportunities for African instrumental music on global platforms.
