Seven people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road crash involving a Nile Star Coaches bus on Sunday night in Lapok Mor Village, Nwoya District.
The accident occurred at around 1:15 a.m. on May 4, 2026. It involved an Isuzu bus (registration number UBP 736U) traveling from Arua and a Benz Actros trailer (SSD 040A/SSD 498C).
According to preliminary police findings, the bus driver, Mandella Kadin Abugo, who is currently in police custody, attempted to overtake two vehicles ahead before colliding head-on with an oncoming trailer.
Four passengers died instantly at the scene, while 16 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Anaka Hospital for treatment. Police later confirmed that three more victims succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to seven.
Eyewitnesses aboard the bus alleged that the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey. They further claimed that passengers had raised concerns, but these were reportedly dismissed by the conductor.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the crash is being treated as a serious traffic incident, with investigations ongoing to establish the exact cause.
“We can confirm a fatal crash involving a Nile Star Coaches bus in Nwoya District in which seven people have lost their lives and several others were injured. The driver is in custody as investigations continue,” he said.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, particularly during night travel, as investigations into the crash continue.
