The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Lumumba Kasule, has said the military deployment at Nation Media Group (NMG) premises was authorised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as part of an ongoing security-led investigation.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Lumumba said the events that led to the disruption of operations at NMG outlets on June 28, 2026, were triggered by an inquiry involving security agencies.
“The events of 28th June 2026 that led to the disruption of operations at Nation Media Group were occasioned by a security-led inquiry instituted by His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda,” Lumumba said.
The incident saw NMG outlets, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV and Daily Monitor, temporarily shut down after orders issued by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The shutdown followed a military operation in which security personnel cordoned off the media group’s premises, restricting movement in and out of the facilities.
The closure and military presence sparked public concern, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding the raid and the involvement of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
However, Lumumba said the operation was part of an ongoing investigation involving multiple security agencies.
“The inquiry involves the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police Force, other security agencies and experts,” she said.
She added that government would provide further information once the inquiry is concluded.
Addressing concerns over UPDF involvement in the matter, Lumumba said the army’s participation was within its mandate as part of Uganda’s broader security structure.
“Everything was done by officials with the blessing of their appointing authority, President Museveni. Let us wait until the security-led inquiry is completed,” she said.
The minister did not disclose details of the issues under investigation, saying more information would be communicated after the security review process is completed.
