Police and the Military Police have impounded at least 30 vehicles during joint operations targeting motorists violating traffic laws in and around Kampala.
The operations have targeted vehicles fitted with illegal sirens and flashing lights, those without number plates or with concealed registration plates, as well as motorists accused of reckless driving.
According to Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson Michael Kananura, the operations are being conducted in accordance with the law to restore discipline and order on the city’s roads.
“A total of 30 vehicles have so far been impounded during joint operations conducted by the Uganda Police Force and the Military Police in and around the city,” Kananura said.
He said the impounded vehicles were found to have committed various traffic violations, including using illegal sirens and flashing lights and concealing number plates.
“The operations have been conducted in accordance with the law, targeting vehicles and motorists involved in traffic violations. These included vehicles without number plates, those fitted with illegal sirens and flashing lights, those with concealed number plates, and vehicles whose drivers have been engaging in reckless driving,” Kananura said.
Kananura said the drivers of the impounded vehicles would be brought before courts of law to face charges.
“The drivers of the impounded vehicles will appear before courts of law to answer the charges preferred against them,” he said.
He warned that the joint operations would continue until discipline and order were restored on the roads.
Kananura also urged motorists and members of the public to cooperate with security personnel conducting the operations and comply with traffic laws.
“We therefore urge the public to cooperate with the officers conducting these operations and comply,” he said.
