Police in Wakiso District are investigating the killing of a 54-year-old man who was shot dead by suspected armed robbers in Kigoogwa Cell, Gombe Division.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 14, 2026, at about 10:45 p.m. as the victim, identified as Ssempewo Michael, was returning home with his wife after shopping.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the couple was confronted by unknown armed assailants who allegedly demanded money from them.
Police said the couple handed over Shs500,000 to the attackers, who then demanded additional money.
Ssempewo reportedly resisted the demand, prompting one of the assailants to shoot him in the head while he was seated in the driver’s seat.
He died at the scene, after which the attackers fled.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said investigators responded to the scene and began gathering evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
“ The deceased has been identified as Ssempewo Michael, aged 54, who was attacked by unknown armed assailants while returning home with his wife after shopping,” Owoyesigyire said.
He said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects first demanded money from the couple and received Shs500,000 before allegedly demanding more.
“The assailants reportedly demanded money from the couple, who handed over Shs500,000. They subsequently demanded additional money, and when Ssempewo resisted, one of the assailants shot him in the head while he was seated in the driver’s seat. He died at the scene, and the assailants fled,” Owoyesigyire said.
Owoyesigyire said police visited the scene and recovered and documented relevant exhibits as part of the investigation.
“Our officers responded and visited the scene, where relevant exhibits were recovered and properly documented. Statements have also been recorded from witnesses to help investigators piece together what happened and establish the identities and whereabouts of the suspects,” he said.
The body was conveyed to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continued.
Owoyesigyire said police were pursuing leads aimed at identifying and apprehending the suspects.
“Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects. We are following available leads and continuing to gather evidence that can help establish the circumstances of the shooting and bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
