Police in Nateete have arrested a 35-year-old maid accused of stealing a two-week-old baby from the child’s parents’ home in Lugala, Kampala District.
The suspect has been identified as Zainab Adam, who was arrested at Arua Park in Kampala following investigations into the disappearance of the newborn.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the baby was born on September 6, 2026, at Kawala Health Centre III and was discharged from the health facility two days later together with the mother.
Kawala said the family subsequently hired a maid to assist the mother in taking care of the newborn.
“On September 19, 2026, the mother, Harriet Mudondo, went outside the house to wash clothes, leaving the maid inside with the baby. When she returned, she discovered that the maid and the baby were missing,” Kawala said.
She said the suspect allegedly left with the baby’s birth card and clothes.
Following investigations, police traced and arrested Adam at Arua Park, where the newborn was also recovered safely.
“The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue,” Kawala said.
Police have urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when hiring domestic workers and ensure that their backgrounds are properly verified before entrusting them with children.
“Police urge parents and guardians to exercise caution and avoid entrusting their children to strangers or people whose backgrounds have not been properly verified,” she said.
The recovered baby is now safe as police continue with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
