Police have shot dead a suspected robber who allegedly attacked a student of Metropolitan International University in Mengo with a group of men armed with pangas.
The incident occurred on October 23, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., when the female student was travelling home on a boda boda and was attacked near the interchange between the Northern Bypass and Entebbe Expressway.
According to Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the attackers, believed to be about four in number, grabbed the student’s bag containing two mobile phones before she raised an alarm.
“The victim raised an alarm, attracting police officers on patrol. As the officers responded, the suspects fled into a nearby swamp,” Rusoke said.
Police officers pursued the suspects into the swamp, where one of them allegedly turned on an officer and attempted to attack him with a panga.
“The suspect was shot and died while being taken for medical treatment,” Rusoke said.
Police recovered a panga, a knife and the student’s bag containing her two mobile phones from the deceased suspect.
The identity of the deceased had not been established by the time of the police statement. His body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Rusoke said police operations against criminal gangs were ongoing, with patrols and vigilance intensified in crime-prone areas across the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area and other parts of the country.
“Our operations against criminals are ongoing. We have intensified patrols and heightened vigilance, enabling our officers to respond swiftly to criminal activity in a number of crime-prone areas in Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area and other parts of the country,” Rusoke said.
