The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has  detained 10 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal operations in the Bulengeza area of Namulaba, located within the Mabira Central Forest Reserve (CFR).

The investigation, focused on halting forest degradation, led to the discovery of illicit logging, timber trading, and charcoal production.

The suspects, identified as Okech James, Mugabo Twalik, Mutabazi John, Lubega Ibrahim, Motabi Hamza, Nsubuga Charles, Keleto Jingo, Sebufu Edrisa, Musigura Nkoge Monday, and Atanasi Moses, are now facing charges.

NFA official noted that Mugabo Twalik and Sebufu Edrisa are known repeat offenders, having already served prison sentences for similar offenses before their recent involvement in illegal activities within Mabira CFR.

James Mununa, the NFA Coordinator of Enforcement, underscored the importance of the recent operation. He stated,

“Our team has made significant strides in stopping forest destruction in Mabira. We are committed to protecting the forest and ensuring that those involved in these illegal acts face justice,” he said.

During the course of the operation, police conducted searches at the residences of the suspects and recovered an array of items including power saws, timber, fuel, various tools, and charcoal.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Francis Olugu, serving as the NFA Police Liaison Officer, confirmed that the arrested individuals are now facing charges under the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act of 2003 and the Penal Code Act of Uganda for illegal possession of forest produce and conspiracy to commit felonies.

Walukamba highlighted that the apprehension of Joseph Ecima—a central figure in coordinating illegal logging activities in Mabira—has spurred further arrests. He elaborated,

“We are now tracking other accomplices, including businessmen, politicians, and government workers who are funding these operations. They will be brought to justice” he said.

Aldon Walukamba, the NFA spokesperson  further described the role of the arrested individuals stating they they’re footsoldiers of those who finance forest crimes.

“These suspects are the foot soldiers of those who finance forest crimes. They cut trees, transport timber and charcoal, and hide them in strategic houses near the boundaries of Mabira CFR. We found timber, charcoal, burnt oils, and other destructive instruments used in these illegal activities.”
