In a landmark move aimed at improving the welfare of police officers, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has flagged off the construction of 1,200 modern apartments at Naguru Barracks.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Police Construction Unit under the Directorate of Logistics and Engineering, is expected to be completed within a year.
The project promises to provide officers with dignified and secure housing, a longstanding need within the force.
While officiating the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, IGP Byakagaba stressed the importance of efficiency in execution.
He urged engineers and contractors to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
“This initiative is a significant step towards improving the welfare of police officers and their families. Together with the police’s top leadership, we are focused on enhancing the overall well-being of the police force, and this project is one of those testaments to that commitment,” Byakagaba said.
The launch was attended by top police officials, including AIGP Dr. Namutebi Hadijjah, the Director of Welfare, Production, and Sports, who underscored the importance of decent housing for officers.
“Adequate housing is not a privilege—it is a right and a cornerstone of effective service delivery. When an officer lives in secure, decent accommodation, their morale is strengthened, their productivity enhanced, and their loyalty reinforced,” she remarked.
AIGP James Apora, one of the senior officials overseeing the project, assured the police force that the construction would be completed on schedule.
With this undertaking, the Uganda Police Force is making strides in addressing housing deficits, reaffirming its dedication to the well-being of its personnel.
