After over two decades as the face of government communication, Ofwono Opondo has announced he will be stepping down from his role as the Uganda Media Centre Executive (UMC) to vie for a parliamentary seat.
Opondo who has served in various communication roles for 26 years, says the time has come to transition from government spokesperson to legislator, as he sets his sights on representing the elderly in Parliament.
“I wrote to the president notifying him about the conclusion of my tenure in three months,” Opondo revealed.
He added that he will officially resign by the end of this month to prepare for the 2026 elections. “I am soon submitting my resignation letter to the president.
Opondo said he’s much ready to kick Nandala Mafabi out of parliament.
“I have my campaign funds ready. I am going to take on Nandala Mafabi and I have everything it takes to knock him out,” he said
Speaking on The Capital Gang show this Saturday April 19, Opondo emphasized that his next chapter is about legislative reform.
“After 26 years of serving as a communicator for various arms of government, it was time for me to move to the legislature and help create reform there,” he stated.
He further noted that he is in the midst of consultations with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his close allies about the shape and strategy of his campaign.
Opondo’s move marks a significant political shift as he joins a growing list of senior government figures seeking elective positions ahead of the 2026 general elections.
