After two decades in opposition politics, Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu publicly declared his support for President Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) during a rally in Bugweri on Sunday.
At the rally, Katuntu was unveiled by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who draped him in a yellow NRM cape to enthusiastic applause from supporters.
When given the microphone, Katuntu addressed the crowd, reflecting on his departure from opposition politics:
“The leaders in opposition nolonger need us, they said they don’t need us, if you were me what would you have done?”
He then called on the people of Bugweri to rally behind President Museveni.
“Whoever believes in me as their captain, let us build a team to seek votes for President Museveni,” he said.
Katuntu was formerly a prominent member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), serving as the party’s shadow attorney general and one of its chief strategists during its early years.
In Parliament, he has chaired several key committees, including Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) and Rules, Privileges and Discipline, earning a reputation for legal acumen and political balance.
The move marks a significant political shift in Bugweri, signaling growing support for the NRM ahead of the upcoming elections.
