Uganda’s legendary Afrigo Band took revelers on a soulful musical journey during this month’s edition of Friday Night Live at Guvnor, delivering a nostalgic performance filled with timeless hits and infectious rhythms that kept the dancefloor alive deep into the night.

The night also marked the debut of I&M Bank Uganda as the new sponsor of the monthly event, ushering in a fresh wave of energy and a commitment to celebrating Ugandan music and culture.

A diverse and vibrant crowd turned up at the upscale nightspot, with music lovers of all ages eager to experience one of the country’s most iconic bands in a setting known for its unmatched ambiance.

The evening kicked off with energetic DJ sets from Guvnor’s resident DJ, spinning a lively mix of Ugandan urban classics and newer chart-toppers to set the tone.

At exactly 11:00 p.m., the unmistakable live instrumentation of Afrigo Band took over the stage, igniting the night with an hour-long set of beloved classics including Abaana b’Afrigo, Jim Wange, and Batuuse, complemented by nostalgic renditions of old-school hits that bridged generations.

The tempo rose at midnight when celebrated vocalist Rachael Magoola stepped up for a powerful set, sending the crowd into a frenzy with Emaali, a favorite at traditional Ugandan gatherings. The night peaked when Obangaina dropped, drawing enthusiastic singalongs and energetic dancing across the venue.

More classics followed, with touches of Zouk and smooth grooves that maintained the electric yet soulful energy.

Later in the night, Sophie Nantongo brought an added sparkle to the lineup, captivating the audience with her signature ballads Nkwagala Nnyo and Love Super, earning loud cheers and heartfelt singalongs.

Speaking after the show, Tshaka Mayanja, Marketing Lead at Guvnor, celebrated the event’s growing cultural impact.
“This is more than music. It’s about culture, memories, and a shared identity. Friday Night Live is now a key platform for celebrating Ugandan heritage, and we’re proud to have I&M Bank join us in creating lasting experiences,” he said.

Friday Night Live is held every last Friday of the month at Guvnor, and will return on July 25, promising more iconic performances and unforgettable nights.
