At least six people, including five Kyambogo University students, were left critically injured on Monday night after a gas explosion tore through Sports Pro Hostel in Banda Zone Nine, Nakawa Division.
The blast, believed to have been triggered when a student attempted to cook from her room, ripped through the ground floor of the three-storey building, shattering windows, blowing off doors, and injuring bystanders.
Among the worst hit is Frank, the hostel’s security guard, who was first rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to Naguru Hospital in critical condition.
Five Kyambogo students were also injured two of them identified as Flavia Chelangat and Florence Akello while the identities of three others were still being verified by press time.
Police confirmed the incident and said emergency teams quickly contained the situation.
“Our officers from the Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly, secured the area, and ensured the victims were evacuated for treatment,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango told reporters.
The victims are currently admitted to Naguru and Mulago National Referral Hospitals, where they continue to receive treatment.
Onyango noted that while the extent of the damage was significant, the timely police intervention prevented further casualties.
