In 2020 when Covid hit the country forcing government to close almost everything, Tonny Lukwago didn’t care about the restrictions.

Determined to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a singer , he walked 20 kilometres to record his debut album.

“I didn’t even notice the distance was long,” Lukwago says.

Fast forward, in 2024, the song ‘Hullo’ which was recorded during the Covid pandemic and released in 2022 has become the toast of the town.

This is the story of Lukwago, who goes by the name Waya Boy.

Born in 2001 at Lubaga Hospital, Waya Boy says he was inspired by African legends like Fela Kuti and Mariam Makeba to this his music is one that blends traditional rhythms with modern styles.

After releasing ‘Hullo’ Waya Boy later released ‘Bujingo’ another single.

The Afro-pop maestro has a  unique sound, captivating stage presence, and thought-provoking lyrics that have  continued to turn heads, especially on social media .

He has since garnered  a large following on YouTube( 38.1k subscribers), Triller, Vero, TikTok(10.8k followers), Instagram, and Facebook  as his music his Ugandan heritage and international appeal.

Waya Boy says during this short spell, he has been able to perform alongside renowned artists at major concerts and festivals including the Kampala Art Biennale, Laba Arts Festival, and Nyege Nyege Festival.

He also boasts of having worked with top producers like Herbert Skillz, and Kennedy Kumapeesa among others.

“I’m grateful for the support of my fans and team. My goal is to inspire and uplift through my music and influence,” he says as he notes that not even the sky is the limit for him.
