An inmate at Masindi Government Prison has lost his life following a violent attack by a fellow prisoner in the early hours of Saturday, August 3, 2025.
According to Uganda Prisons Service, the incident involved convicted prisoner Moses Tuhame (Prisoner No. MDI/829/2023), who was serving a sentence for aggravated defilement, and remand prisoner Anatoli Irumba (Prisoner No. R-534/25), who is awaiting trial for the murder of his mother.
The violent altercation occurred around 4:00 a.m. in the TB isolation ward, where both inmates were being housed.
Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine said that after the attack, Tuhame was rushed to Masindi Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
“The Uganda Prisons Service extends deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. May the soul of Moses Tuhame rest in eternal peace,” he said.
He said Police have taken over investigations into the matter, and a postmortem examination is underway.
The body of the deceased will be handed over to his relatives upon completion of the medical and legal procedures.
This is not the first incident of inmate-on-inmate violence reported in Ugandan correctional facilities.
In April 2023, Joan Bainomugisa who was serving a 19-year jail term for the murder of her husband developed a quarrel with an inmate Zainabu Aguti and killed her at Luzira Prison.
The Uganda Prisons Service has promised full cooperation with police investigators to ensure justice is served.
