Makerere University has formally come out to clarify on its global ranking status, disputing what it described as a misrepresentation in recent media reports concerning its placement in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings.
In a statement , the university addressed media reports concerning the University’s rankings in Africa, saying it had obtained clarification from THE and reiterated its standing as Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning.
“We have since received clarification on the matter, as highlighted in the correspondence below from Times Higher Education,” the statement read.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe emphasized that Makerere continues to earn recognition from several global ranking agencies.
“According to the latest Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) report, Makerere University is ranked 13th in Africa and 912th globally, maintaining its position as Uganda’s leading university,” said Prof. Nawangwe.
He further noted that EduRank places Makerere 7th in Africa and among the top 5% of universities globally, particularly lauding its performance in Health Sciences research, where it ranks among the world’s elite institutions.
“We wish to reassure our stakeholders, partners, alumni, students, and the general public that Makerere has regained its international reputation as a leader in collaborative research, with the highest impact on the SDGs,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Prof. Nawangwe reaffirmed the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and a vibrant research environment.
“Makerere University remains firmly committed to excellence in teaching and learning, groundbreaking research and innovation, and the continuous improvement of our academic and research environment.”
The clarification comes amid growing interest in African universities’ performance on the global stage, with Makerere long held as a beacon of higher education in East Africa and beyond.
