The Ministry of Health has revealed that male survivors of Ebola must abstain from sexual activity for at least six months after being declared cured, or consistently and correctly use condoms during that time.
“Men who recover from Ebola should avoid sex for at least six months or use condoms consistently and correctly,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry explained that the virus can remain in semen for some time even after recovery, which is why male survivors must take precautions.
“Before discharging Ebola survivors, we conduct tests, but we also provide guidance on what they should and shouldn’t do after recovery,” the Ministry added.
Uganda has confirmed seven Ebola cases since the outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this year.
To prevent further spread, the government has closed its border with DR Congo and suspended all flights to and from the country.
Additionally, entertainment gatherings and concerts have been temporarily banned as a precautionary measure.
