The Mengo establishment has has expressed concern over a circulating map of Uganda that omits Buganda, calling it a deliberate and recurrent act aimed at distorting history.
In a statement issued by the kingdom’s Minister for Communication, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, he noted that this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.
He recalled a similar case in 2018 when the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) released a map that failed to acknowledge the existence of Buganda.
Kazibwe emphasized that during the 63rd birthday celebrations of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, held in 2018 at Villa Maria in Masaka, the Kabaka strongly condemned the omission of Buganda from Uganda’s map.
“This is not the first time such an act has happened. In 2018, UBOS released a map that did not include Buganda, and during the Kabaka’s 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria, His Majesty publicly condemned this action,” the statement read.
The statement also highlighted that the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, had previously spoken out against similar actions, informing the people of Buganda and Uganda about the matter.
Kazibwe noted that the kingdom recently discovered yet another map circulating on social media, which again excludes Buganda while recognizing other kingdoms. He asserted that such actions are intentional attempts to divert Buganda from its objectives.
“As the spokesperson of Buganda Kingdom, I want to make it clear that this is a deliberate move meant to distract us from our main goals. However, it will not succeed,” he wrote.
He urged the people of Buganda to remain calm and resilient, reaffirming that Buganda’s legacy is unshakable.
“I want to assure you that no one can erase our history. Buganda is a rock—those who have attempted to tamper with it in the past have faced unexplainable consequences,” Kazibwe stated.
The kingdom’s leadership has called upon its subjects to stay united and focused, emphasizing that Buganda’s historical significance and cultural identity remain intact despite any external attempts to undermine it.
