Prepaid electricity customers who use MTN Mobile Money to purchase Light tokens will be unable to complete transactions this weekend due to a scheduled system upgrade.
In a public notice, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) announced that MTN will carry out a Mobile Money (MoMo) system upgrade starting at 11:00pm on Saturday, February 21, 2026, until 8:00am on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
During this period, all MTN Mobile Money services will be temporarily unavailable.
As a result, UEDCL prepaid customers who rely on MTN MoMo to purchase electricity tokens will not be able to make payments until services are fully restored.
UEDCL spokesperson Jonan Kiiza confirmed the development, noting that the company had been formally notified by MTN about the temporary disruption.
“MTN has notified us of a scheduled MoMo system upgrade starting from 11:00pm on Saturday, February 21, 2026, to 8:00am on Sunday, February 22, 2026. During this period, UEDCL prepaid customers will not be able to purchase Light tokens as all MTN Mobile Money services will be temporarily unavailable,” Kiiza stated.
He advised customers who use MTN MoMo to plan ahead and purchase tokens in advance to avoid inconvenience during the scheduled downtime.
Customers seeking clarification or further assistance have been encouraged to contact UEDCL through its official communication channels.
