President Museveni has extended condolence and offered financial support to relatives of the 12 victims who died in the Kiteezi landfill tragedy.
Heavy rains that pounded the area led to the collapse of Kiteezi KCCA landfill leading to death of 12 people who whose houses were buried while scores sustained injuries.
Commenting about the matter on Sunday, President Museveni said State House will assist families of the victims.
“I have also directed the State House Comptroller to financially assist the families of those who died with Shs5million per person who died and Shs1 million per person who was injured,” Museveni said.
He said this is not part of the legal compensation that may come from the government.
He said he had been informed by the KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka that plans to relocate the landfill in Kiteezi to Mukono were stopped after locals in Mukono protested against it.
“…. but the Dundu People did not want to neighbour with the rubbish and instead, they have been working on positively using the rubbish, which is actually good, to generate electricity, make manure, recycle the plastics, etc. That, however, does not answer the question of why human settlement was allowed near the heap.”
He said he has requested the Deputy IGG, Anne Muhairwe, representing the IGG, to expeditiously investigate the matter and furnish me with the report.
“In the meantime, I have directed the Prime Minister to co-ordinate the removal of all the house-holds in the danger zone, in addition to ensuring the recovery, if possible of the people still buried in the rubbish.”
Museveni said he has directed the Special Forces Command to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts.
