The NRM Central Executive Committee  and parliamentary caucus sitting at State House in Entebbe have endorsed Jacob Oboth Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa as the ruling party’s candidates for speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

Reading the solutions, the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong said the party’s top organ recommended to the parliamentary caucus Oboth’s name owing to his proven legal skills.

“He has demonstrated exceptional legal acumen of command of parliamentary law and his legal expertise puts him in position to interpret rules of parliament to ensure proceedings are done within the law,” he said.

He also spoke of Oboth Oboth’s consistency as party cadre.

“His record of loyalty, principle and adherence of party programs makes him the ideal candidate. He is a uniting and uncontroversial person,”he said.

The NRM top organ also endorsed Thomas Tayebwa as the flagbearer for the deputy speaker position and according to the resolution, this was owing to the need to keep a precedent where previously, a deputy speaker serves two terms.

Todwong also said Tayebwa’s proven mobilisation skills and youthfulness make him the ideal candidate for the party for the position of deputy speaker.

Following the endorsement, the NRM MPs were later asked to vote for the two candidates who won unanimously.

The two candidates for the ruling NRM party will tomorrow face off with others from the opposition as MPs vote for the speaker and deputy speaker for the 12th parliament.
