The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has announced plans to confirm its flag bearers ahead of the forthcoming elections for Local Council I (LC1) and Local Council II (LC2) chairpersons.
The LC elections are scheduled for July 28, 2026, and will be conducted across Uganda’s 72,000 villages.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong told journalists on Tuesday that the confirmation exercise will be conducted through village Barazas organised by the party’s Electoral Commission on July 10, 2026.
The Barazas will be held in all villages across the country and will also facilitate the selection of Women Council flag bearers at village level.
“The purpose of these meetings is to address gaps that exist among party flag bearers and elect flag bearers for the Women Council at village level, including the five executive members of the Women Council,” Todwong said.
He urged all NRM members at village level to attend the Barazas to confirm LC1 flag bearers and choose representatives who will carry the party’s flag in the Women Council elections.
“After the Barazas, the party will conduct endorsements of its flag bearers from 11th July to 14th July 2026,” he said.
Todwong explained that the endorsement exercise will be conducted strictly by party leaders appointed by the Secretary General, including parish chairpersons, sub-county chairpersons, district chairpersons, and other authorised officials.
“The leaders will endorse nomination forms for all candidates who have been elected as party flag bearers. Endorsement means that the nomination forms must carry the official party stamp before candidates proceed for nomination by the National Electoral Commission,” he said.
He added that the endorsement process will take place at sub-county level, preferably at parish level, and advised candidates to contact their respective parish or sub-county party leaders for guidance on obtaining the official endorsement stamp.
Todwong further called upon NRM members to actively participate in the preparation process to ensure the party is fully prepared for the upcoming grassroots elections.
