The Electoral Commission of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting a postponement of its upcoming parliamentary primaries.
According to the Commission, the election date remains unchanged and will proceed as scheduled on Thursday, July 17, 2025
Addressing the media from the party’s headquarters in Kyadondo, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Tanga Odoi reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting the primaries in all 72,000 villages across Uganda.
“There were a lot of rumours that elections were postponed, but we are going to have these elections for Members of Parliament on Thursday,” said Odoi. “Candidates should prepare as per the guidelines.”
According to the official program, polling will begin at 10:00 AM with the reading of voters’ names to confirm attendance. Actual voting is scheduled to take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, using the NRM’s traditional method of lining up behind a candidate’s agent or poster.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong further emphasized that only verified party members appearing in the official village registers will be permitted to vote.
“All the villages will have their registers by Thursday morning. If you are not in the register, you will not participate,” Todwong warned.
He assured party members that all logistical preparations were in place, with register books already dispatched to the districts and set to reach sub-counties and villages before polling day.
Todwong cautioned candidates against divisive and unethical campaign tactics, particularly those exploiting religion, tribal identity, or monetary influence.
“We want to warn those using religion, tribal sentiments and a lot of money — stop. Our members should be civil and respect each other,” he said.
Once voting concludes, presiding officers at each polling center will immediately tally and publicly announce the results, followed by the issuance of signed Declaration of Results (DR) forms, verified and endorsed by agents of all candidates present.
