The leadership of opposition, National Unity Platform(NUP) will later today, Monday meet with the Police leadership to discuss the impasse surrounding the new round of mobilization by the party.

Last week, NUP began the second phase of its mobilization tours aimed at organizing structures for the 2026 general election.

However, police disrupted the activity, saying the party had not followed police guidelines.

The opposition political party has since blasted police for targeting their political activities for repression.

The party has since halted their mobilization tours until tomorrow, Tuesday.

However, Police last week invited the NUP leadership for a meeting later, today, Monday at the Police headquarters in Naguru.

The NUP leadership has since confirmed attending the meeting to harmonize their activities.

Accusations

The National Unity Platform has on several occasions accused the police of targeting their mobilization tours and other political activities.

The party said whereas there is no law that stops their mobilization tours, police has continued to frustrate their activities without genuine reason.

However, police on Friday said everything they are doing is within the law.

Police said whereas several guidelines were put in place and had to be followed by the opposition party before it begins its activities, none was complied with.

“We are cognizant of the fact that Article 29 of the Constitution recognizes freedom of conscience, movement, assembly and association and also the provisions of Article 45, of the Constitution which clearly states that in enjoyment of these rights and other rights, no person should prejudice the human rights and freedoms of others or the public interest,” Police operations commander, Frank Mwesigwa said last week.

“Therefore, when policing all acts of public order, our actions are backed by the laws and guiding principles indicated above. It is also not true, that NUP is specifically targeted and restricted from mobilizing and organizing itself, but unlike other political parties and pressure groups, that have remained law abiding, the NUP continues  to blatantly breach the police guidelines.”

It remains to be seen whether today’s meeting will help ease the tension.
