A police officer attached to the Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) has died following a crash at Getom checkpoint in Katakwi District.
The deceased has been identified as Kilobi Enock, 24 who died in an accident on Sunda at around 8:30 p.m.
According to police ASTU spokesperson Mike Longole, a speeding Toyota Mark X registration number UBR 151S, travelling from the Soroti direction, lost control upon reaching Getom checkpoint.
The vehicle struck a checkpoint signpost before knocking down PC Kilobi, who was on duty at the time. He died instantly.
An election Special Police Constable (SPC) who was at the scene on a boda boda sustained injuries during the crash and was rushed to Katakwi Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The driver of the vehicle survived the crash and was immediately taken into police custody.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
The body of the deceased officer has been conveyed to Katakwi Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
