Three people, including two senior prison officers and a civilian, were shot dead on Monday morning in a tragic incident at Kiboga Prison.
The deceased have been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, Principal Officer Akishuri Bright, and Sarah Ayebare, the spouse of the Officer in Charge at the facility.
According to the Uganda Prisons Service, the shooting occurred at around 10:00 a.m. when Warder Anguyo Moses (No. 13544) allegedly opened fire on his supervisors before fleeing the premises.
Authorities confirmed that the firearm used in the attack has since been recovered. However, the suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
Senior Commissioner and Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said the Commissioner General of Prisons had expressed regret over the loss of life.
“The Commissioner General of Prisons regrets to announce the unfortunate death of three persons following this tragic incident. Police and joint security teams are pursuing the suspect, and anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to come forward,” Mayanja said in a statement.
Security agencies immediately secured the scene and launched a joint operation to track down the fugitive officer. The Prisons Service said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
The incident has sparked concern over internal security protocols within correctional facilities and the safety of prison staff and their families.
