The Ugandan Parliament has urged the government to seek compensation from Kenya following the burning of Uganda House in Nairobi during protests against Kenya’s Finance Bill on June 25, 2024.
While presenting a report on the 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper, the deputy chairman Budget committee at Parliament, Achia Remigio MP for Pian County highlighted the need for diplomatic engagement to recover losses incurred due to the destruction of the Ugandan property.
“The Committee proposed that the Government of Uganda should pursue compensation from the government of Kenya for the destruction of Uganda House Nairobi during the riots,” Achia stated.
The Finance Bill protests, which saw widespread demonstrations in Nairobi, escalated into violence, leading to the torching of several buildings, including Uganda House. The building, which houses the Ugandan High Commission and other offices, suffered extensive damage.
To facilitate the restoration of Uganda House, the government has allocated shs4.401 billion in the proposed 2025/26 budget. The renovation will be conducted in two phases to restore the building to its original state.
However, the allocated funds fall short by shs949 million, leaving a financial gap that the government must address.
