Police have arrested 89 suspects in a series of operations targeting robbery, theft and other criminal activities across the Kampala Metropolitan policing area.
The arrests were made in Mukono, Wakiso and Entebbe during coordinated operations targeting identified crime-prone areas and suspected hideouts allegedly used by criminal groups.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the operations were intended to disrupt criminal activities and apprehend suspected offenders.
“Kampala Metropolitan Police will continue conducting operations, patrols and surveillance to prevent crime and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities,” Owoyesigyire said.
Entebbe Division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 61 suspects picked up during an operation in Lunyo East targeting identified crime spots and suspected criminal hideouts. Police said the suspects were being processed for court.
In Kajjansi, Wakiso District, 24 suspects were arrested in an operation covering Nakigalala Kifene, Kitovu and Makandwa cells in Kitende Ward.
According to police, the operation targeted suspected criminal groups allegedly using the areas as hideouts and bases for planning attacks and stealing property.
In Katwe Division, four suspects were arrested in Zirunumbu, where police recovered an army camouflage uniform, a green hat, 14 bullet cartridges and several sticks.
Police said the suspects had been charged with unlawful possession of government stores and were awaiting court proceedings.
Meanwhile, in Nagalama, Mukono District, three suspects were arrested in Kibuye Village, Kabembe Parish, Kyampisi Sub-county. Police recovered suspected stolen property, including two television sets, a bag of new shoes, two hoovers, household items and a knife, among other exhibits.
Owoyesigyire said some of the recovered items had already been identified by complainants, adding that investigations were ongoing to establish how the property had been obtained.
He urged members of the public to support police efforts by reporting suspicious activities and helping identify recovered property.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities and visit the relevant police stations to identify recovered property, presenting proof of ownership where applicable,” he said.
Police said investigations into the various cases were continuing and that the suspects would be presented before court in accordance with the law.
