Police have confirmed multiple arrests and ongoing investigations following a series of violent incidents tied to the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.
The clashes, which erupted in Mubende, Isingiro, and Rubanda districts, involved physical altercations, destruction of property, and even gunfire.
According to a Police statement, the most severe violence was reported in Mubende District on July 7, when two rival political groups, supporters of NRM candidates Mr. Muhumuza Henry and Hon. Kabanda David clashed at Kyapa Kyeturege trading centre.
The confrontation escalated quickly, with gunshots fired, leaving one individual, Gumisiriza Roger, injured. Others were assaulted using sticks and bricks.
Later that day, another altercation broke out at Nabingola Sub County headquarters, where two vehicles and a motorcycle were set ablaze.
Police from Mubende Central Police Station responded swiftly, containing the situation and initiating investigations. Three suspects were arrested, and the injured were rushed to Mubende Regional Hospital for treatment.
Two days earlier, on July 5, violence also flared in Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Subcounty in Isingiro District. In a coordinated attack, two motorcycles and one vehicle were torched. Authorities have arrested ten suspects, while others are still on the run.
Police held a meeting on July 7 with candidates and NRM electoral officials in an effort to calm tensions and ensure peaceful primaries going forward.
The earliest reported incident occurred on July 3 in Rubanda District, during a campaign event for Hon. Henry Musasizi at Hakashanje Playground, Hamuhambo Town Council.
As the minister was departing around 6:40 PM, his convoy was attacked with stones, damaging one of his vehicles. Earlier that day, his campaign posters had allegedly been vandalized. Two arrests have been made in connection with this incident.
Across the three districts, a total of 16 suspects have been arrested. Authorities say some individuals involved in the violence have fled and abandoned their homes to evade arrest.
“We condemn all forms of violence and reassure the public that the perpetrators will be held accountable,” the Uganda Police Force stated.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we remain committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process.”
The police have urged all political actors and their supporters to refrain from incitement and violence as the NRM primaries continue.
