Pope Leo XIV to undergo lung surgery this week

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to undergo surgery this week to remove a localised lung nodule discovered during recent medical examinations. Doctors recommended the procedure after detecting the growth at an early stage.

He reportedly announced the decision on Sunday while addressing worshippers gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Angelus prayer.

A lung nodule is a small area of abnormal tissue in the lung. Although most lung nodules are non-cancerous, doctors may recommend further investigations or removal depending on their characteristics and the patient’s overall medical condition.

According to the reported medical assessment, the nodule was well-defined and detected at an early stage. Doctors advised the Pope to undergo surgery to have it removed.

“The doctors deem it advisable to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it,” the Pope said.

The operation is scheduled for early this week, and the Pope is expected to remain in hospital for approximately one week to recover.

“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers,” he said.

The Vatican is expected to continue its regular operations during the Pope’s hospital stay. However, decisions requiring his signature may be delayed until he is able to resume his duties.

Despite the planned procedure, Leo has continued with his regular schedule of religious activities and public engagements.

The planned surgery comes ahead of a visit to Latin America scheduled for November 6–17, during which the Pope is expected to travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
